Introduction:
Summer is over, and you now need to start thinking about securing your mobile home for the winter. We have seen the damage winter storms in Ireland can cause to property, so it is important to protect your mobile home from cold, wind, and rain if it is empty during winter.
Check your plumbing
Make sure you drain your plumbing system to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting in extremely cold weather. You can also insulate your pipes to prevent them from freezing.
It is important that this is done by somebody qualified and with the correct equipment to blow all water out of the system. Insurance and warranty may be void if this has not been done correctly.
Air out your mobile home
Airing out your mobile by opening doors and windows will help to clear up any dampness and allow air to circulate throughout the mobile. You could also place dehumidifiers in various spaces. Check for any leaks while you are airing out the mobile home.
Maintain your heating system
Make sure you get your heating system checked and serviced by a professional. They will be able to ensure it is in good working order and also check for leaks.
Secure the exterior
Check the outside of your mobile home and make sure you have it secured in case of any strong winds over the winter.
Additional tips
- Place any removable furnishings in the centre of rooms away from walls and spaced apart from each other to prevent condensation
- Take down curtains and take these home along with any bedding, again reducing condensation and preventing musty smells building up
- Stand mattresses on their edge if there’s room. Leave the cupboard and wardrobe doors open
- Empty, defrost and thoroughly clean the fridge freezer and leave doors open
- Pour salt into bowls and leave as many as possible placed around the mobile to absorb moisture
- Pour antifreeze into plugholes of sinks, showers and baths and into toilet bowls and cisterns to ensure that any water remaining does not freeze. Any product should be specifically designed for use in mobile homes
- Remove the shower hose and shower head as these could be damaged if any water left in them freezes
