Tips on Siting and Maintenance
Siting
A couple of tips to consider when siting your mobile: put the front or back of your mobile home into the strongest prevailing winds in your area, which is the south-west wind in our area. If there is a ditch, or other means of shelter, use it to help shelter your mobile home from the wind. Doing this will also help in terms of heating.
You can insure your mobile home. It can usually be done with your house policy, but you must tie it down in three places on either side, otherwise you may not be able to claim on the policy if something happens.
You don’t need a particular surface to put your mobile home on. Grass may be okay, if the ground is dry and hard. A good coat of stone filling will also help.
The best option is a concrete base. It will keep it clean under the mobile, and it will serve as a better foundation for you to tie it down for insurance. The best advantages are that it won’t sink, or affect the doors.
Maintenance
How long will a mobile home last, and what maintenance is needed? Mobile homes will last for at least 25 years. These days there is practically no maintenance on the structure - the floors and roof - which used to give trouble in the past. They are now so good that it is almost unheard to have a structural fault.
The main requirement is a annual check of the gas appliances, and the central heater/water heater in particular.
